Description
Tetanus Toxoid (TT) is a vaccine that provides immunity against tetanus, a potentially fatal bacterial infection caused by Clostridium tetani. It works by stimulating the immune system to produce antibodies against the tetanus toxin.
Target Diseases
- Tetanus
Dosage Schedule
Primary Series (For Unvaccinated Adults): Two doses, one month apart, followed by a booster dose after 6-12 months. Booster Doses: Every 10 years or after a wound prone to tetanus. Pregnant Women: One or two doses during pregnancy to prevent neonatal tetanus.
Possible Side Effects
- Mild: Pain
- redness
- or swelling at the injection site. Rare: Fever
- fatigue
- or muscle aches. Extremely rare: Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis).
Contraindications
- Severe allergic reaction to a previous dose of tetanus vaccine. Hypersensitivity to any component of the vaccine.
Additional Information
- TT is critical for preventing tetanus in cases of injury or animal bites. Often administered in combination vaccines (e.g.
- DTaP or Td) for broader protection against diphtheria and pertussis. Widely used in antenatal care to prevent maternal and neonatal tetanus.
Storage Requirements
- Store between 2°C and 8°C. Do not freeze. Keep in a dry
- cool place away from direct sunlight.
